Shaikh Hassan bin Rashid Al Khalifa won the Grand Prix class in the Breef Showjumping Championship held yesterday at the Mounted Police Centre grounds in Budaiya.

Riding ARG Whoepie around a challenging course that featured fences 130cm to 140cm high, Shaikh Hassan had a clear round of 67.45 seconds to secure first place and come away with the lion's share of the category's BD600 cash prize.

Juan Fernandez de Mesa on Tarzan finished as runner-up with a time of 74.93s and four faults. Benny Diricx on Al Khalidiah Mikaela was a strong third in 79.74s, also on four faults.

Abbas Isa on Eurocommerce (74.50s), Sami Ghazwan on Fairooz (74.86s) and Diricx on Airforce One (79.89s) rounded out fourth through sixth place, each with eight faults.

Meanwhile, Diricx emerged victorious in the adults class two event (fences 110cm to 120cm) and had the biggest share of the BD500 prize. With Al Khalidiah Mikaela, he had a winning mark of 27.98s to finish ahead of Ghazwan, riding Chilli, who came in in 29.37s for second place.

Shaikh Hassan was a close third on ARG Reinette. He finished in 29.92s. All three top-placers had clear rounds.

Diricx on Airforce One (30.78s), Samia Al Saffar on Lambrusco Greenfield (34.28s), Ahmed Mansoor Ali on Dong Hoi de L'orme (34.86s) and Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Khalifa on Tenor (36.94s) completed the riders with no penalty points in the class.

In the adults class one event (fences 90cm to 100cm) Abdulaziz Al Rumaihi on Grannus took first place in 44.69s. Dr Mohammed Chena on Wansharees (44.88s) and Salem Ali on Amira Coska De (44.93s) were a close second and third, respectively, finishing within fourth-tenths of a second behind.

Apart from the top three, 14 other riders had clear rounds in the class, which offered BD400 in prize money.

In yesterday's juniors classes, Natasha Owen and Ali Hani Al Yabis were triumphant.

Natasha won class two (fences 100cm to 120cm) riding Duell Time to a 27.02s clear round in the jump-off. She took the winner's share of the BD300 prize.

Oscar Lauri on Galopin came second in 28.28s, also with no faults. Hussain Ebrahim Al Afoo on Muhajer was third in 24.46s but with eight penalty points.

Al Yabis then won class one (fences 80cm to 90cm), which helped him pocket the most money from a BD200 prize. On Al Khalidiah Dar, he had a clear round of 19.43s in the jump-off, which had 13 entrants. Abdulkarim Chena on Wansharees was a close runner-up in 19.83s, while Christopher Soto came third in 20.51s. The three leaders, and nine others, had clear rounds in the jump-off.

In the championship's final category for green horses (70cm to 80cm), eight out of 23 entrants came away with a clear round. They included Kate Addison on Persy, Lucy Lunt-Bell on Dakota, Taghrid Dawani on Arctic Rose, Hebe Lanyon on Mandella, Yaqoob Mohammed on Sea Biscuit, Mahmood Nowrooz on School Spirit, Talib Al Alawi on Arabian Dunes and Elyas Hussain on Ghayth.

Yesterday's competition was the third of the showjumping season, organised by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation (Breef) and the Breef Showjumping Committee. It was held under the patronage of Breef president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
