Jawad Claims Grand Prix Win
Ali Essa Ali Jawad won the Grand Prix class victory yesterday in the Goys Showjumping Championship, held at the Mounted Police Centre grounds in Budaiya. The two-day competition is being held under the patronage of General Organisation for Youth and Sports (Goys) president Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa. Jawad, riding Al Khalidiah Aberdeen Road, overcame tough competition from Juan Fernandez de Mesa and Benny Diricx to take first place in the two-round competition with fences 130cm to 140cm high. He completed his ride in 83.62 seconds with no faults, narrowly beating out de Mesa who had a quicker time of 83.51s with his horse Tarazan. De Mesa, however, had four faults, which proved to be decisive. Diricx took third place riding Al Khalidiah Mikaela. He had an 87.18s finishing time. Diricx then also secured fourth place on Al Khalidiah Airforce One in 89.78s. He had nine faults in both rides. Prior to his Grand Prix victory, Jawad claimed the seniors 'C' category (fences 80cm to 95cm) riding Al Khalidiah Senora. Jawad clinched first with a clear round of 29.78s in the jump-off phase. Jassim Isa Al Qattan on Al Jazira Kuwait was the runner-up with a clear round of 30.14s in the jump-off. Amelia Boyd riding Rangerino finished third with a 34.20s clear round. Huda Aryan on Polanski came fourth with a clear round of 35.78s, while Salem Ali on Al Jazira Gino Ginelli took fifth following a ride of 29.85s with four penalty points. Meanwhile, de Mesa emerged victorious in the seniors 'B+' division (fences 120cm to 130cm). Riding Iman De Olid, de Mesa pipped Shaikh Hassan bin Rashid Al Khalifa to first place. He registered a clear round of 40.31s, while Shaikh Hassan, who was on ARG Whoepie, finished with his own clear round of 40.37s. Diricx on Al Khalidiah Mikaela was third in 45.14s, Khalid Hilal Al Khatri on Stacal fourth in 45.51s, and Sami Mohammed Ghazwan on Chilli fifth in 50.59s. Diricx, Al Khatri and Gahwaz each had four faults. In the seniors 'B' class (fences 100cm to 115cm, Ghazwan took first place on Chilli with a 31.19s clear round in the jump-off. Al Khatri, this time riding Bashayer, came second in 27.39s, while Salem Ali on Al Jazira Amira Coska de Toeufles was third in 29.07s. Both had four faults. Al Khatri on Stacal was fourth in 29.17s and Tawfeeq Jaber Ali Al Qattan on Al Yebis fifth in 30.14s, also with four penalty points apiece. In the day's opening competition for green horses, three entrants achieved clear rounds. They included Hamad Fakhrawi riding Cupids Ray, and Elyas Mohammed, who had a clear round riding both Alqutoob and Gayth. Competition continues today with four classes for junior riders at the same venue. Action gets underway at 8.30am. The championship has been organised by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation.
